Real-time translation for every support conversation

With auto-translate, your agents read every customer message in their own language, and customers get replies in theirs. Chatwoot translates both ways in real time on every messaging channel, from live chat and email to WhatsApp, Instagram and SMS.

Works on every messaging channel

Multilingual customer support without hiring for every language

Your team keeps working in the languages it knows. Customers hear back in theirs.

Read every customer message in your language

Chatwoot detects the language each customer writes in and shows their messages in the agent's preferred language. Two agents who prefer different languages can work the same conversation, each reading it in their own.

  • Automatic language detection, including regional variants
  • Translated into each agent's preferred language, or the account default
  • One click shows the customer's original wording
  • No translation when the customer already writes in your language

Reply in your language. Customers read it in theirs.

Agents type the way they always do. Chatwoot translates each reply into the customer's language before it is delivered, on every messaging channel.

  • Replies follow the language of the customer's latest message
  • See exactly what the customer received with one click
  • Email replies keep the quoted thread intact
  • Nothing new for agents to learn

Choose Captain or Google Translate

An administrator picks the translation service and turns on auto-translate for the whole account in Settings → Conversation Workflows. Agents don't need to set anything up.

  • Captain: AI translations that keep your tone and formatting
  • Google Translate: fast translations through your own Google Cloud project
  • Switch services at any time. New messages use the one you pick
  • Available on all paid plans, on Chatwoot Cloud and self-hosted

Auto-translate, answered

What support teams ask before they turn it on.

What does auto-translate do in Chatwoot?

Auto-translate is Chatwoot's real-time translation for support conversations, in both directions. Customer messages appear in each agent's preferred language, and agent replies are translated into the customer's language before they are delivered.

Which translation services can I use?

You can use Captain or Google Translate. Captain translations count toward your Captain AI credits. Google Translate runs through your own Google Cloud project, which you connect under Settings → Integrations before selecting it.

How does Chatwoot know which language to reply in?

Chatwoot detects the language of the customer's latest message and translates replies into it. If the customer switches to the agent's language, messages are shown and sent without translation.

Can agents on the same team read in different languages?

Yes. Each agent sees customer messages in the language set in their Profile Settings. Agents without a preferred language see the account's default language.

Are private notes and automated messages translated?

No. Private notes stay as written so your team reads them as intended. Replies from bots and automations, WhatsApp templates and forwarded messages are also sent exactly as they are.

What happens if a translation fails?

The message is never held back. A customer message is shown as written, labeled “Could not translate”. A reply goes out as typed, labeled “Could not translate, sent as typed”, so the agent knows what the customer saw.

Which plans include auto-translate?

Auto-translate is available on all paid plans, on Chatwoot Cloud and self-hosted. An administrator turns it on in Settings → Conversation Workflows.

Support customers in their own language

Turn on auto-translate and let your team answer every customer, whatever language they write in.
